Beta-lactamase is an enzyme certain bacteria produce to break down and inactivate beta-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins. Combining sulbactam with ampicillin makes the medication effective against bacteria that produce beta-lactamases. Sulbactam inhibits the action of these enzymes, preventing them from degrading ampicillin. This allows ampicillin to remain active and exert its antibacterial effect.
